นุกูล ปัญญาดี
ศิลปิน ผู้ซึ่งทุ่มเททำงานศิลปะติดต่อกันมานานกว่า 40 ปี มีความโดเด่นทางด้านการเขียนภาพสีน้ำ อันดับต้นๆ ของเมืองไทย ในขณะเดียวกัน ก็วาดภาพสีน้ำมันได้อย่างมีพลัง ฝีแปรงที่ฉับไว หนักแน่น ทำให้ภาพของนุกูล งดงามอย่างมีเอกลักษณ์นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ นุกูล จะนำผลงาน ทั้งภาพ และสีน้ำมัน มาให้ชาวเหนือได้ชมกันอย่างจุใจ

The Splendour of Nature

Charoon Boonsuan is one of the country’s earliest and accomplished pioneers of Impressionism. He sees the beauty in his own neighborhood. Behind his house, the vast climbing plant, a New Guinea Creeper, or Red Jade Vine flowers in reddish orange or vermilion color, in contrast against a big tree with green lush leaves standing at the edge of a canal. A reflection of clouds in the sky over the water surface nudges spectators to wonder wherther the view is from a real colorful glass plate looking over arow of shrubs in the garden where he used to take a daily walk.

- ”Colorful Melody of Nature” sees 50 paintings by four well-known artists _ Jay Surasan, Eng-on Homsuwan, Somsak Raksuwan and Sumrith Pechkong. While Jay’s acrylic pieces are inspired by Lanna lifestyle, Eng-on’s watercolour paintings focus more on roses and the vibrant colours of Chiang Mai. Sumrith’s oil on canvas paintings play more with landscapes and the issue of land use and farming and Sumrith prefers to use symbols to reflect on the realities of life and society.

He studied at the College of Horticulture; the HotelSchool ; The Conservatories Mannheim and Amsterdam;and The OperaStudio of Hanover. As a concert singer, he has performed as asoloist in more then 400 concerts; as a weaver of tapestries he hashad several exhibitions and created more then 250 works. He workedas a steward on cruise ships travelling around the world for threeyears, became a bailiff in Switzerland and later on he managed aTheater agency and created big China shows and travelled as Tourmanager with the most famous ballet companies through the world. Heis teacher of dramatic art and voice; and was for eleven years thetechnical director of the Summer Music Festival of Youth and Musicin Germany and is an expert on Chinese theater,
He has lived in Chiang Rai since 2001 and started making hisCornelages two years ago.

Margaret Bhadungzong of the Welcome to Chiang Mai
Chiang Rai Magazine was on hand for the openingof the Colorful Melody of Nature exhibition at the 116 Art Gallery.

The 116 Art Gallery is hosting the Colorful Melody of Nature showing until the 15th. With 50 paintings by Impressionist artists Eng-on Homsuwan, Jay Surasan, Somsak Raksuwan, Sumrith Pechkong, the showing reflects their love of nature with oil and watercolor paintings. Vibrant flowers and peaceful landscapes are on show at the 116 Art Gallery, open from 11 am to 6 pm daily except closed on Mondays. 94-120 Charoenmuang Road, Tel. 053 302 111.

Recently a friend of mine invited me to see this exhibition of Thai artists at the gallery on Charoen Muang Road a few hundred metres from the Nawarat Bridge. I was not particularly interested as my visits to art galleries have been spoilt by frequenting the famous Musee D’Orsay in Paris where I have been moved to tears by the splendour of the Monets, Manets, Van Goghs and countless others housed there. How delighted I was when I visited this gallery to find that here, near to the centre of Chiang Mai, I could witness and really enjoy an experience of a similar nature. The current exhibition in this wonderful gallery, founded some eighteen months ago by local business woman and philanthropist Mrs. Wanthip Nimmanahae minda, features four Thai artists whose undoubted talent and creativity make this a very special place to visit. Curator Mrs. Margaret Bhadungzong is eager to show prospective viewers the full range of splendid paintings – done in water colour, acrylic and oil – that make this gallery an art-lover’s ‘must-see’.

The elegance and beauty of the rose are captured with carefully balanced shapes and colours by the artist Eng-On Homsuwan, who has recently moved to live in Chiang Mai. A nurse by profession, she has successfully transferred her caring skills in the way she portrays her flowers, skillfully and delicately textured in water colour and instantly pleasing to the eye. A more challenging and somewhat more somber mood pervades the work of southern artist Sumrith Pechkong. Less eye-catching perhaps, but nevertheless a set of highly intricate and interesting paintings, Sumrith stands out as someone who pays great attention to detail, nowhere more so than in his set of trees with their grey overtones and intricate interwoven branches and trunks. His more surrealist paintings, still with a Thai flavour despite their abstract nature, provoke questionings and thought. The third artist in this exciting collection is Somsak Raksuwan, who paints a mysterious landscape of sharply contrasting colours, but with symbolic imagery and splashes of vibrant colour. His paintings, oil on canvas, show a love of nature yet hint at the unknown. Isaan-born artist Jay Surasan, whose work occupies by far the most space, not surprisingly so in view of the immense size of some of his breathtaking canvasses, has created eye-catching and appealing views from the first cursory glance. In his work, full of vivid colour and teeming with life, we enter a world of that unspoiled nature in all its glory where the heavy footprint of human beings has not yet sullied the harmony and beauty of the created world.
